What is Carpal Tunnel?
Patients with carpal tunnel complain of clumsiness when gripping objects, and numbing or tingling in the hands which can extend painfully to the elbow. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which there is excessive pressure on the median nerve, the nerve in the wrist that allows feeling and movement to parts of the hand. The area in your wrist where the nerve enters the hand is a narrow passage way called the carpal tunnel. So when the carpal tunnel pinches the median nerve, the patient has Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Some people who develop this problem were born with a carpal tunnel that is small, but it may also be caused by making the same repetitive hand and wrist motion.
How Do You Evaluate Carpal Tunnel?
Tapping or holding the median nerve will cause pain to shoot to the hand, also bending the wrist back will result in numbness. Tests such as a wrist x-ray, nerve conduction velocity and electromyography can also be performed.
